Remember Dimeji Bankole? His case stalled as Judge suddenly gets transfer letter on trial day

Dimeji Bankole

We might just as well tag it as one of those things which happens in this country that no one can really explain but all have to fully accept. Judge Donatus Okorowa, the trial judge handling the case involving former House of Representatives Speaker, Dimeji Bankole, was suddenly transferred on Monday, further stalling the case which for most Nigerians has already gone on for too long.
What makes the transfer so bizarre is that the case was scheduled to be tried for four days between September 24 to 27.
Okorowa has now been moved to the Federal High Court in Taraba State by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta.
Bankole is standing trial on a 16 count criminal charge of contract inflation and fraudulent embezzlement of public funds.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, through its spokesman, Wilson Uwujaren, condemned the sudden transfer of the judge, remarking  that such incidents are part of the problems the agency faces on corruption trials, and the reason why the EFCC has consistently called for the creation of a special court for the trial of corruption cases.
Even Dimeji Bankole, through his lead counsel, Wale Akonni SAN, pleaded with Justice Auta in a letter to allow the trial judge continue to preside over the case to prevent undue delay.
According to reports:
The EFCC counsel, Festus Keyamo, said he is waiting to hear from the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Ibrahim Auta, if Mr. Okorowa will be coming from Taraba to preside over the trial or if the case will be assigned to another judge.
Mr. Bankole had on June 13 and July 26 filed two separate motions seeking the court to invalidate the charges laid against him by the EFCC, saying that proof of evidence did not attribute any shred of criminality against him.
But in December 19, 2011, Mr. Okorowa dismissed the applications insisting that there was sufficient evidence placed before the court linking Mr. Bankole to the alleged crime.
Mr. Okorowa refused for the case to be struck out, holding that the insufficiency of prove of evidence as observed by the defendant was immaterial since it is the duty of the court to determine the value of the proof of evidence.

“No More Power failure In Nigeria From December” – Goodluck Jonathan

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the country would soon bid final farewell to power outages beginning from December, 2012 just as it has plans to generate 5,400 mega watts from the current4,400 mega watts.
goodluck jonathan funny picture Senior Special Assistant to President Goodluck Jonathan on Public Affairs, Doyin Okupe told Jouranalists in Abuja on Monday that the president is no doubt leaving up to expectation on his election promises.
According to Mr Okupe, the 5,400 mega watts target will be actualize following the arrangement by the National Integrated Power Project (NIPP) to add 1,000MW to the current 4,400 as against the little above 1,900MW before the president assumed office.
Mr Okupe said: “When the President assumed office, the energy capacity of the country at that time ranged between 1,900 megawatts to some 2,200 megawatts.
The Independent Power Projects, 10 of them were grounded and nearly moribund, but today Nigeria is generating in excess of 4,400 megawatts of electricity.
“Some cynics have said this is due to high level of water in the hydro generating plants in Shiroro and Kanji. This isn’t true.
“I can tell you authoritatively that why it is true that every year there is a marginal increase in power supply, because of the increased contribution in the hydro plants, that cannot account for the 15 hours or so that is being currently enjoyed in many partsof the country.
Speaking further, Mr Okupe said “The reasonfor this additional increase is coming from the NIPP that are now adding between 600 and 800 megawatts to the national grid.
That’s what is responsible for this new improvement and between now and December, we are expecting nearly an additional 1,000 megawatts, because of increase and an arrangement that have been made for purchase and supply of gas to some of these NIPP projects. More areas will enjoy longer hours of electricity supply by December.”

Worshippers of the World Liberation Ministry located along old Sapele-Benin express road on Tuesday took to their heels during a prophesy programme when a female member delivered a horse.
The horse was however dead by the time Journalists visited the church. It was gathered that the woman whose identity was not yet known started screaming during the prayer session and began to bleed from the vagina before the horse came out.
The General Overseer of the church, Evangelist Silva Wealth, said he was still amazed at what came out of the woman.

He told Journalists that during prayers a revelation came that there was a woman with an issue and that something was blocking her womb.

Silva said as prayers intensified, the woman started screaming and bleeding started when the object came out.
The cleric said he couldn’t confirm whether the horse was dead or alive because he didn’t go near it.
“I can’t describe the object. We have seen people that vomited several things during our service but not this type of thing. God has been blessing our ministry with prophesies and miracles, “he said.
People rushed to the church to catch a glimpse of the horse when news of the delivery filtered into town.
